The writing instrument brand “ZOOM”, which advocates creative writing, has undergone a complete rebranding (reconstruction of the brand). Aiming to be a “contemporary design pen from Japan”, from February 17th, 2023(1), new style, limitless writing instruments in 3 categories/7 products that fuse Japanese technology and sensibility will be rolled out sequentially at ZOOM dealers(2) in major cities nationwide.

【Design】
Although the pen has a streamlined, universal shape, the knock part appears to float 3.5 mm above the body. In fact the body and the knock part are joined with a black die-cast clip. When knocked movement is transmitted to the main body mechanism via the clip. The glossy duralumin and matte die-cast light and shadow creates the illusion that the knock part (tail plug) is floating in air. ZOOM expresses this as “open air knock”

【Materials】
The body is constructed from high strength A2017 duralumin used for building materials and aerospace equipment parts. A lightweight 21.3g (ballpoint pen) that puts less strain on your writing hand. Machined duralumin maintains its beautiful form for many years without compromising the strength of the material. Due to its high rigidity this material is difficult to process and is rarely used in writing instruments. The surface is anodized to enhance corrosion resistance, and it always feels fresh and dry. The clip is made of die-cast zinc to resist breakage.

【Color】
Three body colors are available. For Sand Silver (photo above) a non-mechanical, silver color with a warm feel and sense of closeness to the living body was sought. Full Black aimed for a jet black, achromatic sense of presence. Graphite Blue is a bluish lead color reminiscent of the traditional indigo color. Each color is natural toning unique to Japan that is neither primary nor metallic. Duralumin is a material that is difficult to work with but by repeated delicate color adjustments a texture was achieved.

Ballpoint pen refills BR-ZKE33 and BR-ZK33 are newly developed products that are especially tuned for this product. To ensure a stable writing line width and smooth and precise writing the ball seat inside the tip was expanded by 102%* compared to our conventional products. Because the seat is wide the ball does not come off from the seat regardless of the writing angle; the amount of ink discharged is stable so a constant line width is always maintained. Since oil-based ballpoint pens are versatile, we have tuned them so that the line width does not change depending on how you write, and that the feeling of writing is not impaired.

【Design】
Body alternates between transparent and opaque depending on the lighting and angle. Silver body is overlaid with a highly transparent DURABIO™ (Mitsubishi Chemical Co., Ltd.)* outer layer for a frosted glass-like matte finish. As a result the silver body creates patterns and light reflected from the body merges with the DURABIO™ to create an illusion of a thick body. The charm of this product is the ever-changing silhouette. Cap is made of lightweight aluminum and attaches to the body tail for a low center of gravity and smooth writing. The crown aims for a higher degree of harmony by adding a slightly undulating waveform.
*DURABIO™ is a bio-engineered plastic. Along with features such as high transparency and excellent optical properties, it has excellent scratch resistance and impact resistance. It is also used as an alternative to glass.

【Color】Was developed in two major color pallets. Main colors are Calm Silver, Full Black and Graphite Blue (photo above). Trendy colors are Matte Blue, Matte Brown and Matt Gray. A total of 6 colors.

【Water-based gel ballpoint pen refill 0.5 mm/BN-ZKE】
Ballpoint pen refill BN-ZKE is a newly developed product that has been specifically tuned for this product. The ball seat inside the tip has been reduced to 93%* compared to our previous model in order to ensure writing lines that have the intonation of a fountain pen. Since the seat is narrow, the ball is not on the seat surface when the writing lowered down, so the amount of ink discharged is increased. For this reason richly expressive writing is made possible by tilting the writing angle or slowing down the writing speed to thicken the writing line. The ink is a highly permeable water-based gel ink and has been tuned so that writing with both strength and beauty can be obtained in a synergistic effect with the tip mechanism. It also dries quickly.

【Touch】
Features a surprisingly moist like feel carefully tanned leather that is unexpected for pens. Barrel is covered with the soft-feel coating “Neolabasan™” (Musashi Paint Co., Ltd.). A soothing effect that makes you want to touch even if you don’t want to write.

【Design】
An inverted conical knock bar stands poised on a smooth and elegant triangular body. The delicate tapers are fascinating and has the opposite impact from the moist texture. Knock bar neck is linked to the neck of the nib.

【Color】
Light grayish tones other than black. Enjoy the slight color variations. Colors are Matte Silver, Matte Full Black (photo above), Matte White, Matte Blue, Matte Gray, and Matte Lavender.
